Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from captain Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in multiple interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

But, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable three-nil lead after three Tests.

A loss will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of play – after England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There is no chat like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley concluded.
