UN Removes Penalties on President of Syria Before White House Visit
The UN Security Council gave the green light to an American proposal ending penalties on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria before his Washington trip next week.
He became provisional head of state following his leadership in a revolutionary movement that ousted the previous leader in winter 2024, ending 13 years of civil war.
Washington's ambassador Mike Waltz at the United Nations declared the global body transmitted "a powerful diplomatic message" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a fresh chapter" after Assad's removal.
He had been subject to global penalties while commanding the Islamist group the HTS movement, once connected to the extremist organization. Washington eliminated the group from its registry of international terrorist organizations this past July.
Further Restrictions Lifted
Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on penalties against the Syrian interior official Minister Anas Khattab.
The nation's top diplomat applauded the lifting of the sanctions, posting on social media: "Syria expresses its appreciation to the United States and to friendly nations for backing the country and its population."
Imminent Washington Talks
Sharaa's White House visit this coming Monday occurs subsequent to President Trump stated the Middle Eastern president had made "good progress" working toward stability to the conflict-ravaged nation.
Both presidents held discussions initially this past May, when Trump visited Riyadh during a visit to the region.
After that meeting, the US president described him as a "resilient figure" having a "formative history".
His former militant faction served as al-Qaeda's branch within Syria until he severed ties during 2016.
Previous US Visit
Monday's visit is not the president's debut journey to America during this period. In September, he made history as the initial Syrian president to present to the global assembly at UN headquarters after approximately sixty years.
During his address, he declared the nation was "regaining its deserved status across international circles" and demonstrated unity with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
