The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Each time a prominent honors show nears, one notices a clamor to include of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked completely during that awards season
  • A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles in the world and have been for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these are games without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
