A multitude of vibrantly dressed Ethiopians assembled in downtown Ethiopia's capital for the traditional Irreecha event over the past days.

This thanksgiving celebration is celebrated by the Oromo people, the biggest population group, and occurs at the completion of the nation's main monsoon period.

Annually, participants gather around holy water bodies to give thanks to their higher powers for the fertile landscape that the precipitation have delivered.

"I've been celebrating Irreecha for the last nine years," commented 25-year-old one attendee.

"In my view, this event embodies my identity, it demonstrates the dignity and importance of my community."

Traditional clothing and jewelry

Gentlemen, females, the elderly and the young all take part, adorned in attention-grabbing attire and jewellery.

They sing, dance, tell tales and deposit recently harvested foliage and flowers in liquid - representing life, renewal and aspiration.

The celebration does not only attract people from throughout the country, attendees come from around the world.

"I attended a year ago - it was wonderful, so beautiful, I brought along my kids with me currently," said one visitor, originating from Northern Ireland.

"It's incredible. Everybody wants to say hello, all attendees offers affection and says welcome."

The initial day of the event took place on recently in the main city. On the following day, celebrants made their way to a provincial location, a settlement just outside the main city.

While Irreecha has its roots in native spiritual practices, it is now observed by the bulk of Oromos, regardless of their religion.
