Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Major Role in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the likelihood of taking part.

"We know that time is getting short and various factors around that, aside from his injury, but further aspects," the selector added.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of back injuries, with recurrences in multiple past seasons causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games anyway. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for another day, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
