Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, identified by surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of access tunnels down to the facility... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - established jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were numerous UK service members stationed over the holidays. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, after an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
