European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States
The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
