A Prediction Market Participant Made $Nearly Half a Million from Bets on Maduro's Downfall.
A bettor earned a substantial sum on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro just before it was made public, sparking debate about whether someone profited from confidential information of the event.
Market Movement in Wagers
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be out of power by the end of January rose in the hours before President Donald Trump stated on the weekend that the president had been taken into custody.
One account, which registered on the site last month and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $436,000 from a modest bet of $32.5K.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a cryptographic address for identification.
Market Signals Before Public Statement
Platform data shows that users estimated the likelihood of a political change at just under 7% in the afternoon of the Friday before the event.
Yet the market's assessment had jumped to over 10% by shortly before midnight and surged in the morning of January 3rd, suggesting a sudden change in betting activity right before the official statement was made.
"This specific wager has all the characteristics of a bet based on non-public details," said an industry expert.
A small number of other traders also made large payouts from similar wagers.
Regulatory Scrutiny Grows
Elected officials are growing concerned.
Proposed legislation introduced on the start of the week aims to prohibit government employees from making trades on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.
