2026 Declared the Age of the Croaking Craze.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent developer-focused presentation was highly engaging, my main revelation was not the intended one: I am convinced that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

Exactly five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these leaping protagonists. Given that a band of frogs is known as an army, it seems they are staking their claim.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Amphibians have been far from new to the gaming landscape. Ever since the era of Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a niche presence. However, their popularity has seemingly exploded in recent times.

A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam yields an overwhelming flood of results. While, some of these are novelty titles, a significant portion are bona fide Frog Games.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To understand this phenomenon, I undertook a thorough analysis into the past five years of hoppy gaming on Steam. My approach was somewhat arbitrary, counting games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.

The data tell a compelling story: a consistent increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The amphibian's rising status in the public consciousness is somewhat evident elsewhere, such as the resurgence of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. However, the wave in gaming looks particularly strong.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

In my opinion, this is a trend I can fully endorse. Frogs offer natural creative potential for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are ideally shaped to be designed as endearing characters that frequently end up as a highlight in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their long tongues and grappling abilities enable a host of unique mechanics.

Many of the announced projects clearly utilize these traits. Take the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what does this mean for 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has even started—and the possibility for more—the stage is set for it to be the most significant year so far.

Should these games find success—and traditionally, games from this showcase often do—we might just be entering a true croaking cultural moment.
